BIAA-ASEASUK collaborative small research grants 2009-10

The British Institute at Ankara and the Association for South-East Asian Studies UK invite applications for small grants to carry out research on any aspect of relations between South East Asia and the Ottoman Empire/Turkey from the 16th century to modern times. Grants will be awarded to support travel to conduct a discreet piece of research, for example to work in a museum, library or archive; applications for travel to third countries as well as South East Asia and Turkey will be considered provided they are clearly relevant to the theme of the research. The maximum value of a grant will normally be GBP 2000, although they may be considerably smaller. Applicants should submit a short CV, including a list of any relevant publications, the name and email address of one referee who may be contacted in case of need, and a covering letter including a full description of the proposed research and how it relates to the applicant's current and future research aims in general, in addition to a budget and itinerary. These materials should be submitted to Siobhan McKeown at biaa@britac.ac.uk no later than 15 September 2009. The proposed research should take place before 1 April 2010. Applications are welcome from suitably qualified post-doctoral scholars of any nationality. In exceptional cases applications from candidates at an advanced stage of doctoral research may be entertained. These grants will be awarded as part of the British Academy-funded collaborative interdisciplinary research project, Islam, Trade and Politics across the Indian Ocean which is administered by the BIAA and ASEASUK.
