Call for Papers

Abstract submission deadline, 31 March 2009.

Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno, created a revolutionary concept as the founding ethos of the newborn state of Indonesia. Pancasila was formulated as an intellectual concept to unify the rich variety of cultural, ethnic, linguistic, social and religious groups found throughout the vast and diverse Indonesian archipelago. Expanding its reach into all fields of society touching upon economics, politics, social justice, religion and human rights, after much contested debate, Pancasila was eventually accepted as the founding ethos of Indonesia.

Many years of economic, educational, political, and state-building development have passed since Pancasila was first espoused, resulting in the contemporary reality of Indonesian society. The current evolution of globalization and supra-national state structures have redefined the nation-state, directly challenging the relevance of a political philosophy developed decades ago and have put intense pressure upon the current interpretation of Pancasila.

The aim of this conference is to address questions and issues exploring to what degree Pancasila, as the founding ethos of Indonesia, continues to be relevant in a global and modern Indonesian society? To what degree can Pancasila and its followers address the various challenges of the centrifugal forces of globalization and modernity?

True to the multidisciplinary goal of the Yale Indonesia Forum (YIF), this topic will be approached by scientists and researchers from various intellectual and academic disciplines in order to highlight and question the different aspects of Indonesia’s founding ethos of Pancasila.

Abstracts are therefore invited for papers from scholars focusing on any social, economic, cultural, or religious aspect of this issue. Yogyakarta has again been chosen to host this year’s YIF conference because of its nature as center of academic excellence in Indonesia, and as such, capacity to bring together intellectually and ethnically diverse people from all parts of Indonesia.

Persons wishing to present papers at the conference are invited to submit a one-page abstract in electronic form (PDF and MSWord) to Frank Dhont at the following address: frank.dhont@ yale.edu. All papers will be presented in English.
